Doctor Who Media Question

How is gender represented in this clip?

Media homework

This Doctor Who clip begins with a low angle of the master which already gives a representation of gender. The low angle makes the viewer see him at the top of the screen and this gives the audience an impression of power- suggesting he is at the top of the hierarchy. This very first scene in this clip is confirming the common stereotype that males are seen as more dominant. The low angles show the master as superior whereas the high angles tend to show Martha (female) as inferior. There is a long shot and then a close up shot of the master which both place him as the most dominant character.
When Martha enters the scene the camera is at her point of view which means the audience are in the position of the character and can see everything they see. This enables the audience to sympathise with that character as they are put in a vulnerable position just like she is. When she walks towards the master, the camera cuts to a man holding a gun. Not only does this show she is being guarded but it also both enforces and - the typical gender roles. This is because the man is holding the gun giving him more power over the people without a weapon which enforces the normal gender roles however the fact Martha needs to be guarded insinuates she is dangerous which goes against the stereotypical gender roles.

Everyone is wearing dark colours apart from woman behind the master who is wearing red which represents danger and places her in a higher authority than the other women and men - switching the gender roles as typically men have more authority than women. However red also signifies love and sophistication which shows her as objectified and this helps enforce the image of normal gender roles. The red dress could suggest the woman is sophisticated, but may also have a fiery side to her which is not yet shown.

Tv Drama Textual Analysis - The Walking Dead

Fantasy genre shown by the zombies as it is not real.
Its set in a prison and you can tell this because of the building itself and the prisoners/zombies inside.
The facial expression on the woman is angry and this shows she is a woman who is ready to kill. This indicates she is a strong woman who seems to have lost her innocence along the way. Her expression is not hesitant showing she has killed before and it doesn't bother her.
The woman's hair is spread out behind her which shows the scene is in fast motion. Her dark hair signifies that she is a strong and dark woman herself.
The different clothing of the prisoners/zombies and the group of fighters shows the separation between both parties. This helps to identify that if she is killing one person in the blue then she is likely to help kill all the others too. The womans clothes are dirty and messy which indicates she is not too bothered about her appearance and that she may not have the items necessary to clean herself up, also indicating she may be homeless. Her dark clothing may show that she has a dark personality, a killer, as shown in this image.
There is a shallow depth of field which places the zombie and the woman at the front of the image, therefore making them the centre of attention.

In this image women seem to be portrayed as strong and independent. You can tell this as she is in front of the others and is ready to kill.
